Frequently Asked Questions
  • Why the Traditional Mass?

  • Is the Mass said in Latin?

Yes, all Masses are said in Latin, although on Sundays the epistle, gospel, and sermon are in English.

For your convenience, Daily Missals are available when you enter the church.

  • What is the difference between High Mass & Low Mass?

At a High Mass, most of the parts are sung by the choir or the priest. At a Low Mass, there is no singing.

  • How do I go to Confession?

Guidelines for the Sacrament of Confession

Confession is administered in English and the priest sits behind a screen while the penitent kneels. You do not need to know Latin to confess, although the priest will say the prayers of absolution in Latin.

How to make a good confession

After making a thorough examination of conscience, kneel in the confessional and start with the phrase “Bless me, Father for I have sinned, it has been [X days/weeks/years] since my last confession.”

Confess your mortal sins by number and kind, and do not be afraid to ask for assistance from a priest if you are struggling with the confession process.

  • May I receive Communion?

1962  Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion

Baptized Catholics in a state of grace, and who are observing the Eucharistic fast are invited to come forward for Holy Communion. By a ‘state of grace’ is meant those who are not conscious of any grave sin which has yet to be absolved by sacramental Confession. Proper observation of the Eucharistic fast is no food or drink (other than water) one hour prior to the reception of Holy Communion.

Holy Communion at St Francis de Sales is received kneeling at the communion rail and on the tongue. There is no need to say "Amen" after receiving, the priest will say it for you. Walk back reverently to your pew and commune with the God Whom you have just received and Who is now present in you Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

  • What should I wear?

Coming to Mass modestly and appropriately dressed is a concrete way to honor the dignity of God’s house, where Our Lord dwells in the tabernacle.

  • Must women wear a veil in church?

The apostolic tradition of covering the head in church is encouraged, but not required.

Chapel veils or mantillas are available for purchase in our bookstore.

  • How do I register with the Parish Registration?

  • Is the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in communion with Rome?

Decree of Pope Francis confirming the use of the 1962 liturgical books

The Holy Father Francis, grants to each and every member of the Society of Apostolic Life “Fraternity of Saint Peter”, founded on July 18, 1988 and declared of “Pontifical Right” by the Holy See, the faculty to celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass, and to carry out the sacraments and other sacred rites, as well as to fulfill the Divine Office, according to the typical editions of the liturgical books, namely the Missal, the Ritual, the Pontifical and the Roman Breviary, in force in the year 1962.

They may use this faculty in their own churches or oratories; otherwise it may only be used with the consent of the Ordinary of the place, except for the celebration of private Masses.

Without prejudice to what has been said above, the Holy Father suggests that, as far as possible, the provisions of the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes be taken into account as well.

Given in Rome, near St. Peter’s, on February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, in the year 2022, the ninth year of my Pontificate.

    Francis
